Kumasi, Aug 29, GNA - Gaskia Club, a youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened to break away from the Party unless the National Executive Committee (NEC) of NDC rescinds its decision to bring under one umbrella all the splinter Zongo community based social clubs in the country that were affiliated to the Party. The Party's NEC at its recent meeting with executives of the social clubs in Accra reached an agreement to the effect that all pro-NDC social clubs that were based in the Zongo communities should be submerged under the National NDC Zongo Caucus.
The move, according to the NEC, is part of efforts to foster unity and also streamline the activities of the splinter groups whose activities will now be facilitated by the Caucus under the supervision of Governing Council.
Alhaji Muftawu Mohammed, National Secretary of the Gaskia Club, in an interaction with newsmen in Kumasi at the weekend, said his club would resist moves by the NDC's NEC to dissolve the club and put it under the Caucus.
He said the executive of the Gaskia Club had resolved not to go into a merger with any social club or be dictated to by the Caucus but adhere to its own principles and mission statement. "If our pleas to the NEC is not taken into serious consideration we would have no alternative than to break away from the NDC and be committed to rendering social services", Alhaji Mohammed noted. He said the Club had since the beginning of this year given loans totalling 60 million cedis to 30 members of the party to expand their businesses.
He said the recipients of the loan, who are all women petty traders, received two million cedis each. Alhaji Mohammed said the club had also facilitated the training of 23 unemployed girls in sewing and that it was also sponsoring 61 members to acquire skills in the manufacturing of batik and tie and dye. 29 Aug 06
