National Coordinator for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Divine Nkrumah, has advised the political hierarchy to be mindful of what he has termed the impending consequence of inaction.

He penned an opinion positing that the poor have little to lose when there is anarchy.

Divine Nkrumah lamented that the mismanagement of the country has pushed several individuals below the poverty line, with only a few above it.

He said the few individuals who are at the top are worsening the living conditions of the people, a situation he warned could trigger a serious crisis for the country.

He cautioned that if unrest should erupt in the country, it will spare no political faction. In his opinion piece, he said anarchy does not differentiate whether you are wealthy, poor, NDC, or NPP.

This impending danger, he stated, will make those who are perceived to have acquired their wealth through dishonorable means seen as enemies of the poor who have nothing more to lose.

He has therefore challenged religious, traditional, and civil society leaders not to sit unconcerned while our systems continue to decay further.

He admonished them to rise and call political leaders and office holders to order so they will uphold their responsibilities and ensure equity in the distribution of national resources, so in the end, it will benefit all citizens and not just a few.

“We cannot afford to sit idly by and ignore the decay within our system. Religious leaders, traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and civil society organizations must rise now and vocally pressure the political ruling class to uphold their responsibilities. It is essential that those in authority ensure equity in the distribution of national resources and adopt an egalitarian approach to governance that benefits all citizens."

Divine Nkrumah maintained that if traditional and religious leaders, CSOs, and other influential persons continue to remain passive while the government continues to erode our nation’s stability, they stand to lose more when there is anarchy or chaos in the country.

“If influential figures—traditional leaders, religious leaders, CEOs, affluent individuals, business owners, security heads, and institutional leaders—remain passive while the government erodes our nation’s stability, they stand to lose more than many others when chaos ensues. They risk losing investments, properties, businesses, authority, and influence. Is that truly what they desire?”

Those in power, particularly at the highest levels of the political hierarchy, must understand a crucial truth: the poor have little to lose in times of anarchy. Unfortunately, due to the mismanagement by the ruling class, the number of people living below the poverty line far exceeds the few at the top who are complicating life for the masses. Poverty and wealth do not discriminate based on political affiliation or ideology.

Over the weekend, I witnessed a troubling situation that made me apprehensive about what lies ahead for those in positions of authority. If unrest were to erupt in this country, it would not spare any political faction. Regardless of wealth or influence, everyone would be affected. Whether you are a wealthy member of the NPP or NDC, you would be grouped together and treated alike. Anarchy does not differentiate between those who have earned their wealth and those who have acquired it through less honorable means; all will be seen as adversaries to the poor. In the end, the impoverished have nothing left to lose.
