The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has disclosed that she filed a report with the police about a plot by some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to assassinate her son, Ato Koomson, days before he was subsequently stabbed.

Speaking at a Peace Talk event to settle disputes between the NDC and the NPP in the constituency at the Kasoa Odikro Palace, Hawa Koomson said that despite her commitment to peace and ensuring the safety of her son, the NDC ended up stabbing him in the chest during a recent voter transfer exercise.

“The day I heard that there’s a plot to shoot my son, the person who informed me showed me the person behind the plot and I saw him. I reported the matter to the police, informed the Crime Officer, and he asked us to go and show him the person. My police bodyguard and I went to show him the person. He reported the matter to the Divisional Commander, and he advised that we do not sleep at the same location that night,” she stated.

She detailed events leading to the stabbing, noting that the main objective of the attack on her son was to eliminate him at all costs.

“Right in front of the NDC constituency organizer, someone slapped my son. My son responded in equal measure because he is a man. I didn’t bring him up to cower to anyone who would slap him; I taught him to retaliate, and he did return the slap. After the slap, the very person who had plotted to shoot my son was the one who came from nowhere to stab him, and because they had intended on causing me to be bereaved, they stabbed him in the right chest where his heart is located,” she stated.

She emphasized that while she is not in a position to forgive the attackers of her son, she has left the matter to the police, who are in charge of investigating and prosecuting the matter in court.

Ato Koomson was stabbed in the chest by an NDC ward organizer during a voter transfer exercise.

The suspect was arrested and is assisting with investigations.

However, the NDC has mounted a spirited defense for the suspect, claiming he was rather protecting himself from being lynched by Koomson's thugs.

Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Awutu Senya East has been designated as a hotspot by security officials because the constituency has a history of violence during elections.

The peace talk, facilitated by the chiefs of the area, was aimed at fostering harmony between the NPP and NDC in the constituency.
