A security analyst, Dr. Adam Bonaa, has expressed serious concerns regarding the potential for residents of Bawku to participate in the 2024 presidential election due to escalating violence in the area.
Speaking at a Democratic lecture on Monday, October 29, 2024, he urged the public to pray for the community, highlighting the tragic loss of eight lives, including two brothers who were killed while en route to bury their father.
"Let’s say a prayer for Bawku. We are told eight people have died; two brothers died on their way to bury their father. Whatever we are doing is related to the elections; I am not sure there will be elections in Bawku,” he stated.
Dr. Bonaa also addressed the rise of political vigilantism across the country, urging security enforcement agencies to take decisive action against offenders.
"The recent NDC-NPP clashes have underscored the growing trend of electoral violence. I am sure you are all aware of what happened a few days ago. Vigilantism has taken on new forms in the country; before the promulgation of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, they were using sticks and pestles; now they have resorted to the use of guns," he noted.
The Democracy lecture series, organised by Care For Free and Fair Elections Ghana (Care) in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, aims to address instances of electoral violence and inflammatory statements by high-ranking officials, while also promoting transparency and peaceful, fair elections.
