Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has clarified his statements during the NPP flagbearer contest where he called for a fresh face to lead the NPP amidst economic difficulties.
The former NPP presidential candidate previously argued that anyone involved in the current economy should step aside to give a fresh face a chance to lead the party ahead of the 2024 elections.
However, speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on November 27, 2024, he clarified that political seasons come with many utterances.
He explained that despite his earlier statement, he feels Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, has distinguished himself well enough to lead the party to victory.
“Have you followed politics? Did you follow the NDC politics? Did you hear the things that Dr. Duffuor said about Mahama or what Kojo Bonsu said about Mahama?
“When you are in a political context, there are certain lines you don’t want to cross. But for me, I didn’t just say it because I was contesting. Even in 2022, when the economy was beginning to falter, I was one of the few people who could come out and say no, the president should take action. I disagreed with him if he hadn’t taken any action to remove those managing the economy. That is what we call principle,” he said.
He continued, “What is important is that when you are in a context, you have to put your best foot forward. I know you have gone through difficulties, so I felt that if you had a fresh face and a new dawn, it would give you a better opportunity.
“But the fact that the result does not give you that fresh face does not mean you can’t support any other person. Does it mean that your political career has to come to an end?
“So, it means you have to work hard, and that is how come he has worked hard. He has worked very hard on this campaign, and people are happy with him. He has strong views.”
