The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has slammed the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, for distributing food during the special voting on Monday, December 2, 2024.

The MP, during the special voting, was seen in a video sharing packaged food with voters.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with critics deeming it unconstitutional, leading the Office of the Special Prosecutor to launch an investigation into the matter.

Initially, Seyram Alhassan denied the allegations, but in a subsequent interview with Citi News, she admitted to the incident, explaining that the food distribution was done at the request of voters.

CHRAJ, however, has condemned the action, labelling it an act of corruption.

The Commissioner of CHRAJ, Dr. Joseph Whittal, addressing journalists in Accra on Tuesday, December 3, stated, “It is not right, in legal terms, to share food or money with anyone in the queue in preparation to vote. It is tantamount to corruption and integrity issues.”

Dr. Whittal added, “Having seen that this could even happen to security officials, we have always assumed that it would not be the case. It never happened in the past, but this time around, it seems it has happened, so we will factor that into our next election.”
