The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has once again taunted former President Mahama for refusing to avail himself for a one-on-one debate before the 2024 December elections.
Many Ghanaians and institutions have called for a presidential debate between the two leading candidates, and Dr. Bawumia himself has also openly challenged Mahama to a live debate to discuss records and policies, a call both Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have not welcomed.
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Three Tema Constituencies on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Dr. Bawumia revisited the issue by saying that Mahama is refusing to debate him because Mahama cannot back the claims he often makes on political platforms with data if a debate were to take place.
Dr. Bawumia touted the NPP's development record in different sectors, which he said were superior, adding that unlike Mahama and the NDC, who do not have data to buttress their claims, he is "a man of data" and has irrefutable data. Hence, he noted, Mahama's inability to debate him.
"There is not a single area that you can point to where you will say this government has not performed better than the previous one. And I challenge them because I am a man of data. I speak only with data," Dr. Bawumia said.
"When I say we have done better, I have the data to support it. And this is why the former President doesn't want to debate me because he knows he doesn't have the data."
"He can make statements on political platforms where nobody will challenge him, but he cannot make them in front of me. He cannot."
