The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has challenged the Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to address five pertinent questions regarding the state of Ghana's ailing economy.
"He used to give lectures every month about how to run an economy and how to fix the economy. He posed 170 questions to my vice president, Amissah Arthur. He should go and answer the 170 questions himself. Indeed, he shouldn't answer 170 questions; he should answer only three questions. Why is the exchange rate GH¢17 to a dollar? Why has Ghana's debt risen from 120 billion to 767 billion in 8 years? Question 2, he should come and answer," Mahama said.
"Question 3, why is inflation where it is? Why did it rise to 54% under your administration for 8 years? Let me add two more. Question 4, why did you borrow GH¢42 billion from the Bank of Ghana? He should come and answer those questions. You don't need 170 questions. If he wants, he can answer them himself, but Ghanaians are asking him four questions. He should come and answer the four questions and explain to Ghanaians why we are where we are," he added.
He continued, asking the last question: "Why has he run away from the economy to digitalisation? He used to make noise about the economy; today, he can't mention the economy; it is not in his vocabulary. Anytime he opens his mouth, digitalisation. Come and talk about the economy. That's question 5. Tell him to come and answer them."
Ghana's economy took a downturn in 2020 after the coronavirus pandemic impacted the nation.
TWI NEWS
Following the pandemic and the economic disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine war, the government introduced measures to restore economic stability.
Among these measures was a three-year financial assistance program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilise the economy.
Although there are signs of a modest recovery, Ghanaians continue to face severe hardships, with the cost of living rising steadily.
Some critics argue that Dr. Bawumia has shifted his focus from addressing economic recovery to prioritising digitisation initiatives, leaving concerns about economic stability unaddressed.
