The inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama as Ghana's president was marked by an atmosphere of immense excitement at the Black Stars Square, where both local and international dignitaries gathered to witness the event.
With flags of Ghana and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flying in the air, supporters danced to the rhythms of drums and vuvuzelas at the ceremony.
Among the distinguished guests were Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Senegal's Bassirou Diomaye Faye; Burkina Faso's Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore; Kenyan President William Ruto; President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Gabon's Brice Oligui Nguema; alongside leaders from Sierra Leone and Guinea, and several other dignitaries.
In a symbolic gesture, a group of NDC youth brought attention to their political rivalry with the opposition by parading the figure of an elephant on a coffin, referencing the emblem of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This was shared online by Pulse Ghana on their X page on Tuesday, January 7, 2024, stating, "NDC youth carry elephant coffin, say they are going to bury the NPP".
A video accompanying the post, showed the youth clad in party paraphernalia, carrying a coffin painted in the colours of the NPP, featuring the party's emblem - an elephant.
This act is a reflection of the recent defeat of NPP's 2024 Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, to John Mahama in the presidential race.
Mahama's victory also marks a historic return to power after his previous unsuccessful bids, with his ability to connect with the desire for change among Ghanaians being a key factor in his success.
