President John Evans Atta Mills, on Thursday received a rousing welcome from the people of Aflao when he paid a day’s working visit to the area.
Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) thronged the palace of Togbe Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of Aflao at Agblekpui, near Aflao, where the President was received.
The visit took President Mills to Battor and Mepe in the North-Tongu District and he had a stopover at Sogakope.
It was to reassure the people of Government’s commitment to meeting their aspirations and to seek their continued support.
Security personnel had a hectic time controlling the crowd, which surged forward to have a glimpse of or get a handshake with the President.
The President was accompanied on the tour by Mr Henry Ford Karmel, Volta Regional Minister, Mr Henry Ametefe, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joe Gidisu, Minster of Roads and Highways, Mr Fiifi Kwetey, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.
Togbe Fiti in an address read on his behalf, commended Government for the level of development across the country, and said the President’s personal humility and peaceful posture had enhanced the tranquility and progress in the country.
He expressed worry that Government failed to grant Aflao municipality status, contrary to earlier pronouncements, thereby jolting the joy of the people who had always been with the NDC and deserved better.
Togbe Fiti called for the reconstruction of the badly damaged Aflao- Diamond Cement Factory road, and to facilitate the proposed construction of a rail line linking Lome, the Togolese capital with the Diamond Cement Factory.**
