Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has vehemently debunked assertions by his critics that he has done nothing for his constituents at Suame and so he doesn’t deserve another term as MP on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He has stated emphatically that he had over the years worked assiduously to advance his constituency in the areas of education, roads, health, provision of portable drinking water and scholarships to needy students, among other projects.
The Suame MP, who submitted his nomination forms on Thursday to contest in the upcoming NPP parliamentary primaries, insisted that his good works are his trump card, stressing that he would win the party’s primaries hands down.
This was contained in a statement read by Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, Special Assistant to the minority leader, at a press conference on Thursday, which was also attended by NPP delegates at Suame.
Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and some of the NPP executives at the Suame constituency were also present.
The Suame MP rebutted rumours that his long stay in office had created apathy in the party, which as a result, led to sharp reduction of NPP votes in the constituency during the 2012 elections.
Setting the records straight with statistics, Ofosu Boakye said Nana Akufo-Addo recorded 47,768 votes at Suame and the figure was increased to 63,926, which is an increase of 33,82% during the 2012 polls.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also garnered 45,235 votes in 2008 and he increased the figure to 60,829 – an increase of 34.47% during the 2012 elections.
Mr Ofosu Boakye said those peddling falsehood that the minority leader is not attracting votes for the NPP are just throwing dust into the eyes of the public, saying that the above figures show that the Suame MP is loved by the people.
He said Suame had become popular in Ghana and has also experienced massive development in the areas of education, roads, health, among other critical areas, all because of Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s good works so he should be maintained as MP.
Ofosu Boakye sternly cautioned NPP people that are interested in the Suame seat, to campaign in a decorous manner and avoid peddling falsehood just to taint the image of the minority leader who is respected across the country.
