Miss Ghana Chases Nortey Dua

DAYBREAK investigations within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ledzokuku Constituency over the past few weeks reveal that so far about three (3) well known members of the party are bracing themselves to contend with the incumbent MP, Hon. Nii Nortey Dua in the forth coming Parliamentary Primaries to decide who bears the ticket of the party in that Constituency for the 2012 Parliamentary Elections.
The incumbent MP who doubles as the Deputy Sports Minister is seen to have lost touch with a greater number of the constituents and that has been a major encouraging factor to all those who might be having the ambitions to contest him in the Primaries.
Many of his constituents are of the view that the MP is stingy and also has very poor human relations. Some are further raising questions about his performance in the House of Parliament. This was his campaign message in 2008 as he criticized the then MP and Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Glady Ashitey of been a “dumb” in the August House.
However, the MP still enjoys considerable support among the party members within the old Teshie Township.
Among the 3 names currently making the rounds in the constituency as likely to contest with the sitting MP is Mr. Sowah Boye-Sekan, a junior brother of the late Nii Adjei Boye-Sekan, the first NDC MP in the fourth Republic in the Ledzokuku Constituency.
Mr. Boye-Sekan is very popular among the many electorates within the indigenes of Teshie who mainly resides at the old Teshie Township, the same place the current MP draws majority of his support base. Should Mr. Boye-Sekan contest, it will be a cause of worry for the incumbent.
However, the major threat to Nii Nortey Duah in his bid to retain his place on the ballot paper in the name of the NDC will be former Miss Ghana, Benita Sena Golomeke.
Madam Sena as she is widely known within the Constituency is the favourite among the youth and the women of the party. She is known for her generosity and willingness to support the vulnerable within the party in the constituency. Her contributions to the activities of the party in the constituency too are very noticeable.
Although not a Ga, Madam Sena was born, bred and had lived most of her life in the Constituency. She also appeals to the older Ga women in the larger Teshie Community and seems to have a way with the non-Gas in the Constituency as well. She is currently the Constituency Women’s Organizer.
Hamza Haruna, a youth activist of the party in the Constituency has made known his intentions to also contest the sitting MP in the primaries. It is however too early to assess his chances should he take the bull by the horn when the time is due.
The Primaries to select the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is expected to be held early next year. It is anticipated that two or more notable names within the Constituency will be declaring their intent as the time approaches. Some of the names that many within the Constituency are expecting to step their foot forward include Mr. Daniel Amartey, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ledzokuku-Krowor, Mr. Danny Annang, a current National Vice Chairman of the Party and one Mr. Charles Anyankor.
The Ledzokuku Constituency has been one of the swing constituencies in the Greater Accra Region. The NDC won and maintain the seat with the Late Nii Adjei Boye-Sekan in 1992 and 1996. The NPP also won the seat in the 2000 Parliamentary Elections with Mr. Edward Akita and managed to keep it in 2004 with Dr. Gladys Norley Ashitey. The current MP, Nii Nortey Dua regained the seat for the NDC in 2008.
