Kumasi, April 13, GNA - Alhaji Mubarak Muntaka Mohammed, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawasi, was on Saturday re-elected to contest the seat for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in this year's general election. Alhaji Mohammed, polled 185 votes to beat Alhaji Awudu Ariff, the Party's First National Deputy Organizer, who had 53, out of the 240 total votes cast.
Addressing a constituency delegates congress on the theme: "Consolidating the Gains made so far," Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National Organizer, charged members to go home with unity of purpose, understanding and love and embark on a massive membership drive to ensure total victory for the party in the elections. Alhaji Muntaka congratulated the delegates for the maturity they exhibited during voting and the confidence reposed in him, stressing that the campaign to win power had started after his election. He expressed the hope that members and supporters of the Party would continue to demonstrate high sense of commitment, loyalty, sacrifice and dedication not to him alone, but also to the presidential candidate, Professor Evans Atta Mills.
Mr Joseph Salifu Gooji, Constituency Secretary, congratulated Mr John Dramani Mahama, the Party's running mate and enjoined members to go down to the branches and wards with genuine campaign messages to help the NDC win power. He appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to come out with a clean voters' register. He also emphasised the need for the government to ensure that the National Youth Employment Programme is "depoliticized" for more youth to benefit from it. Mr Evans Kwabena Ablordeppey, Oforikrom Constituency Organizer of the NDC, in an interview after the election, which was conducted by EC officials, advised supporters of the two contestants to remain united behind the candidate to lead the Party to victory.
