Musicians, Pastors, Soldier: Meet the 19 new faces contesting as independent presidential candidates in 2024

Every election year brings unique moments and new contenders to the presidential race.

This year’s general election is no exception, with 39 candidates vying for the presidency. Among them, 27 are independent candidates who have picked up nomination forms from the electoral commission.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, many of these individuals are expected to appear on the ballot paper on December 7, 2024.

GhanaWeb takes a look at the new independent candidates hoping to contest for in this year’s general election in the next three months

George Twum-Barimah-Adu

George Twum-Barimah-Adu (Uncle George) was born on 18 August 1963 and is the third child of his parents. George is the nephew of the late Kwaku Boateng Esq, a former government minister in the government of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

After years abroad, he returned to Ghana in 1993 and began working with the National Insurance Commission in October of that year. He transitioned to the private sector in April 2000 and became the Executive Director of Cypress Investments Limited in 2001.
He is married with three children.

Samuel Apea-Danquah

42-year-old Samuel Apea-Danquah is a Ghanaian entrepreneur in the IT, media, and herbal medicine industry, among others.

He contested in the 2020 General Elections as an Independent Candidate for Parliament for the Ablekuma Central Constituency in the Greater Accra Region but lost to NDC’s Dan Abdul Latif.

Richard Sumah

Richard Sumah is a 47-year-old marketing consultant and an engineer.

Desmond Abrefah

Desmond Kwame Abrefah is a prophet and the founder of Save the Nation Movement. He is also the founder of Come To Jesus Personal Ministry.

Dr Agnes Ayisha

Dr Agnes Ayisha is the Founder of the Liberation of National Youth for Change (LNYC) and doubles as the founder of United Africa Diaspora. She is also a musician.

Dr Nii Amu Darko

Dr. Nii Amu Darko is an Australian-based Ghanaian medical physician by profession and a politician. Born in Osu in 1966, he attended Ghanata, Presec and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

He is the founder and flagbearer of the First Alliance of Independent Reformers (FAIR) political party.

Wilberforce Andrews

He is a former Executive member of United Nations International Monitory Fund and distance associate of the American Administration under President Joe Biden.

T. K. Amenya

Flt. Sgt. T.K. Amenyah is a retired military man who promises a new evolution of modern governance.

Robert Roy Reindorf

He is a businessman who owns a restaurant and is also a musician. His first attempt for the presidency was in 2012, but he withdrew that year due to demands for money from voters.

Paul Perkoh

Born on April 11, 1963, the 61-year-old is the founder and leader of the National Liberation Movement. He is a businessman and the current Managing Director at Apenkwa Trading. He served as a Presiding Elder and District Welfare Chairman at The Church of Pentecost from 1998 to 2009.

Seth Ntim Agyarko

He is the Founder and Leader of the People’s Liberation Front (PLF).

Nana Ohene Aggrey Bentsil Djan

He is the founder and leader of the People’s Party.

Tom Asiseh

He is the founder and leader of the Ghanaian Diaspora Movement and the Independent Presidential Movement. He is also a philanthropist.

Kenneth Kwame Asamoah

Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah is the founder and leader of the Action People’s Party (APP).

James Kwasi Oppong

He is the Founder and Presidential Candidate of the Risen People’s Party and an Apostle.

The Electoral Commission has slated September 9 to 13 for the filing of nominations. We wait to see how many of these 19 presidential hopefuls are able to file their nominations.
