NAPO-Nkrumah-Gate: Bad behaviour should not be excused under the guise of politics - Journalist

Award-winning journalist, Bernard Avle, has criticised Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his recent remarks comparing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s achievements to those of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Reacting to this, he said that bad behavior should not be excused under the guise of politics.

"Let's not excuse bad behavior; bad behavior leads to bad governance. Let's not excuse misbehavior in politics," he said.

He further spoke about the implications of corrupt systems on political leaders, stating;

"If the system that brings you into power is corrupt, it means the politician will end up as corrupt."

Bernard Avle further explained the importance of articulate communication skills.

"Have you seen a chief shouting? Why do they have linguists? Listen to the way Otumfuo speaks; we don't have linguists because chiefs cannot talk. Linguists are highly trained; I believe to rule, you must know how to talk," he added.

He called on the leadership of the NPP to address NAPO's statements, stressing the necessity for effective communication skills in leadership roles.

"A leader must know how to communicate. People in the NPP should talk to him; the NPP has to seriously talk to him. We have not resolved tensions in our political system and our traditional systems. I cannot go to the chief's palace and be shouting; our parliament is built on the adversarial system," he added.

Recently, during his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s legacy surpasses that of the late Kwame Nkrumah, a statement that has sparked controversies and which has been described by many as a political gaffe.
