NDC Asks Former Members To Return

THE National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that all efforts will be made to convince some top executives who have resigned to return to its fold.
Speaking at a news conference in Accra yesterday, the National Chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei, said that the party "regrets these resignations."
The NDC has been rocked by numerous resignations since its national delegates conference held last month at Koforidua.
Notable among those who have quit are the former National Chairman, Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah, a former national Vice Chairman, Kwaku Baah, former Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nti Fordjour, and former Women?s Organiser, Ms Frances Assiam.
Others are Steve Akorli, former MP for the Ho East and a Minister of State in the NDC era, Nikoi Addison, Greater Accra Regional Organiser, Theophilus Addo Mills, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Michael Gamor and Mamfred Nuku-Dei, Volta Regional Organiser and Deputy Organiser, respectively.
However, Dr. Adjei said it was significant to note that apart from Dr. Asamoah and Mr. Baah, none of those who contested for positions at the congress at Koforidua had resigned. ?Indeed, nobody who won any position in the elections at Koforidua has resigned, and they are all working actively and effectively as members of the new executive in order to move the party forward,? he stressed.
The chairman said the party takes objection to the charge of hooliganism and violence levelled against the entire NDC membership by Dr Asamoah, which he used as his reason to resign from the party.
He described the charge as unfortunate, especially when Dr. Asamoah and others who contested and lost the elections had not disputed the results. ?The truth is that the congress was very peaceful and orderly, and the marathon voting, organized under the auspices of the Electoral Commission, was transparent, free and fair,? he said.
Dr. Adjei contended that the congress was also organized by the former executive chaired by Dr. Asamoah and Mr. Baah who, as chairman of the Party?s Electoral Committee, vetted candidates for the various positions.
He said, even though the new national executive as corporate successors had inherited the responsibility for the event at the congress, ?it is important that the former national executive does not escape full responsibility and blame for whatever lapses occurred.?
Dr. Adjei said the outcome of the Koforidua Congress ?clearly showed that delegates chose unity over division, understanding and love over feud and enmity, hence ours will be an open-door policy to forge internal cohesion and unity.?
The national chairman said his administration would mobilize all the experienced and seasoned cadres, former office holders and activists of the party and assign roles and responsibilities to re-empower the party.
With Dr. Adjei at the Conference were other members of the new executive and the party?s former Flagbearer, Professor John Atta Mills.
