The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party, Sammi Awuku, has claimed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is protesting against the compilation of a new voters’ register to deliberately avoid the 2020 general elections.
In an interview with Kwame Afrifa Mensah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show, he explained that the NDC boycotted the last IPAC meeting where other parties made input for the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) that the Electoral Commission presented to parliament recently.
“If we agree with the NDC to withdraw the C.I, what will happen is that the EC must meet with all parties again to get their input. And all these processes can take us to March 2021”, he added.
He furthered that the NPP government does not want to spend even an hour as an illegitimate government. That is why the party supports the compilation of a new voters’ register at this time. “The register should be compiled three months or at least 30 days before elections. But it seems the NDC does not want us to go to the poll”, he stated.
The Electoral Commission submitted a C.I to parliament to approve the compilation of a new register with the use of passports and the National Identification card as the only requirement for citizens.
However, the Electoral Commission has been criticized by the NDC for planning to compile a new voters’ register as the party alleges that the exercise is to facilitate the agenda of the ruling New Patriotic Party.
