The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa, that the biggest opposition party in Ghana is ready and willing to help her and the election management body succeed.
“This is just to assure you that the NDC as a party will continue to play that pivotal role to ensure that our electoral processes are enhanced, to help you succeed because if the EC succeeds, Ghana has succeeded, and all of us have succeeded,” Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said directly told Mrs Mensa and her delegation from the EC when they paid a courtesy call on former President John Mahama on Wednesday, 10 July 2019.
The visit of the 2020 flag bearer of the NDC follows similar visits to former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor as part of the EC’s processes and strategy to enhance openness, engender trust and confidence and give a listening ear to the major stakeholders in Ghana’s electoral process.
At the meeting, Mr Mahama told the EC Chair and her entourage that: “There are issues arising from the last election that we will want to put on board so that you can look at it and see how we can enhance the process so that all of us will feel that the process has integrity and we are confident that we are all being treated fairly so that whoever wins and loses will readily accept that this was a free expression of the will of the people”.
Mr Mahama also urged Mrs. Mensa, who headed think tank Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) to let her “remarkable credentials” displayed in her past office to reflect in her work at the Electoral Commission.
