Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims that the party would not support a northerner to lead as its presidential candidate, declaring that this narrative has failed.
Speaking at the Ashanti Regional Campaign Working Committee Meeting and Women’s Conference in Kumasi on Sunday, August 11, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, emphasized the unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia within the party, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
“Our opponents said our party won’t vote for a northerner to lead us. But that agenda has failed. It is not true that the NPP won’t support Bawumia. Ashanti Region is solidly behind him. It is easier for the NPP to get 85% in the Ashanti Region with Bawumia as a presidential candidate than at any time in the history of the party,” asaaseradio.com quoted NAPO as having said.
He underscored the strategic advantage of having Dr. Bawumia on the ticket, noting that his candidacy will not only mobilize support but also reinforce the party’s dominance in its stronghold.
Dr. Prempeh further highlighted the significance of the current administration’s social interventions, such as the Free SHS policy and the National Health Insurance Scheme, which he believes would be better safeguarded under an NPP government led by Dr. Bawumia.
Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, reinforced the party’s commitment to achieving its ambitious target of securing 85% of the vote in the Ashanti Region.
He emphasized the need to win all forty-seven constituencies in the region, declaring that the NPP is well on track to meet its goals with Dr. Bawumia as the presidential candidate.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, MP for Suame and Chairman of the NPP Manifesto Committee, stressed that achieving this goal hinges on revitalizing the party’s organizational units and ensuring a robust door-to-door campaign.
Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare also emphasized the crucial role of the NPP’s Women’s Wing in the campaign, urging them to play a pivotal role in securing the desired outcome.
