NDC will better promote the fishing sector - Prof Mills

Apam (C/R), Aug. 26, GNA - Professor John Atta Mills, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress ((NDC), on Tuesday gave the assurance that his government would revive and better promote the fishing sector to improve the living conditions of fisher folks.

He said the NDC would introduce pragmatic policies and programmes that would include regulating the activities of foreign bigger fishing trawlers to ensure that they (foreign trawlers) did not enjoy enough catch to the detriment of local fishermen.

Prof. Mills said this when he addressed fishing communities at Apam, Gomoa, Dago and Mumford, as part of his tour of the Central Region to canvas for votes.

He said the bad policy of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have affected so many people including fishermen, making life very hard. "Foreign fishing trawlers have destroyed the work of the local fishermen, while products of market women were not being patronized because of bad policies," the NDC flagbearer said.

Professor Mills, therefore, appealed to Ghanaians to vote the NDC back to power for better lives and rapid developments of the country. He said the NDC when voted into office would expand the Apam Catholic Hospital and supported salt industries in the area to increase production.

Prof. Mills promised to establish a cold store at Apam and also rehabilitate roads in the township if voted into power.

Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe, National Women's Organiser of the NDC, said the time had come for people in the region to vote a "citizen" to become a President of the nation and urged them to vote massively for Professor Atta Mills on December 7, 2008 for development and better living conditions.

The NDC parliamentary candidate for Gomoa West, Mr Francis Kojo Arthur, said for nearly eight years rule of the NPP, the constituency especially the district capital, Apam, had not seen any meaningful development.

The chief of Apam, Nana Edu Effrim X, in an address read for him, at the Apam rally appealed to Prof. Mills to fulfil the promises of the NDC if voted into office and said Apam lacked a market and good roads to befit it as a district capital.
