A group of disgruntled members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) mainly drawn from the Western, Greater Accra, Ashanti and Grong Ahafo regions have broken away from the party to form a new political party. The new party named United National Convention (UNC) seeks to ride on the back of the discontent among the rank and file of NPP who are increasingly becoming despondent about the chances of the party winning power in the upcoming 2016 general elections. The group claims to have the backing of several bigwigs within the NPP and can count as many as a hundred (100) former Ministers, District Chief Executives (DCEs) and other appointees in the erstwhile Kuffuor-led government in its fold.
According to a founding member of the UNC who wants to remain anonymous for now, “the NPP has no chance in the upcoming elections because of the disunity in the leadership of the party.” “We are not going to sit down to be humiliated again by the NDC as they did in 2012” he adds. He contends that Nana Akuffo – Addo, through his divisive tactics, has ensured that the NPP has lost its luster and shine and is becoming unpopular even among its own members. “If a party is so unpopular even in opposition, how do you convince the neutral folks and other floating voters in the country to vote for you?” he asks. “How could you have a party where the leading elected members have been sacked and their positions taken by people like Freddy Blay and John Boadu who know next to nothing about political party management and governance?” He further quizzed.
“The UNC draws its support mainly from the NPP but being a youth-focused party with a vision to emulate the feat of Julius Malema of South Africa and seize the destiny of the country into our hands, we are open to every open-minded youth in this country who wants to see a change but not the Nana Akuffo-Addo way” he reveals. In his view, the youth of this country needs to be economically-empowered and take control of the resources of the nation as this is the only way to free the country from the shackles of poverty and suffering.
Interim executives of the group claims the party is currently going through the registration process of the Electoral Commission and would soon come out to officially outdoor its executives and launch its campaign. In the coming days and weeks, the group intends to embark on several activities to drum up support for its programmes and alternative agenda for Ghana’s growth and development.
All communications to the group is now being routed through their media officer.
