NPP elections: I’ll have no challenger – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, nicknamed Wontumi, has confidently stated that he would retain his position.

Mr Boasiako said he would retain his seat easily despite the fact that many people intend to unseat him.

“I will maintain my seat again as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, because I am going into the race unopposed,” Wontumi declared.

Reports say some party stalwarts like Kwabena Kokofu, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama and Kwabena Nsenkyire, a leading member of the party, are lacing their boots to topple Wontumi.

Wontumi stated emphatically that he was not bothered about reports that some party people were eyeing his post.

“They want to become popular so they have intentionally announced plans to contest me,” Wontumi told Nhyira FM.

He disclosed that he originally had plans to vie for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP but some top party people convinced him to stop.

“Top party people that I respect so much told me not to contest for the national chairman position, which was my original target.

“According to them, I still have a lot to offer for the party in the Ashanti Region and I have taken their wise counsel so I will retain my position.”

Wontumi, it would be recalled, played a significant role in helping the then NPP to capture power from the NDC during the 2016 general elections.

He used his finances to rent an office for the Regional branch of the NPP at Krofrom in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.
