NPP founder cautions against needless controversy

George Ayisi-Boateng, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, has cautioned against needless controversies over the selection of the party’s parliamentary candidates.

He said its members should not do anything likely to stoke internal squabbles and cracks in the party’s front.

This comes amid rumours about the endorsement of some particular aspiring candidates by the NPP’s presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.

Mr. Ayisi-Boateng dismissed the rumour as being baseless, a mischief meant to cause confusion, and strain the relations between the flag-bearer and some of the candidates.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Kumasi.

He insisted that Nana Akufo-Addo had no doubts about the competence and capabilities of all the aspirants and would never either openly or covertly throw his support behind any particular person in any constituency against the other contestants.

Mr. Ayisi-Boateng, who is the flag-bearer’s Regional Campaign Coordinator, said as an astute politician, he is too clever to do that – aware of the dire consequences for the party’s unity.

He said the leadership of the party was investigating the source of the rumour, and would not hesitate to apply appropriate sanctions against those behind it.

Mr. Ayisi-Boateng encouraged those the contesting the parliamentary primary elections to ensure clean and healthy campaign to put the NPP in a strong position to win the 2016 general polls.
