NPP primaries: Who leads NPP Yendi Constituency?

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cleared three aspirants namely Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama, Baba Osman Daney and Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah to contest the Yendi constituency parliamentary primaries slated for June 20, 2020.

About 608 delegates in 110 polling stations and 30 electoral areas are expected to vote for a candidate to lead the party in the December 7 general election in the Yendi constituency.

The Yendi constituency is a traditional seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) until 2008 when an independent candidate won the seat.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani won the seat back for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2012 and 2016.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs has, however, decided not to seek re-election.

The three aspirants hoping to lead the NPP in the Yendi constituency are all optimistic that come June 20, they will come out victorious.

Umar Farouk Mahama

Umar Farouk Mahama, the number one on the ballot paper and the son of the late Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama believes that he is the preferred candidate by delegates in the Yendi constituency.

According to him, his organisation Livelihood Empowerment Support Programmes has supported farmers, traders, created job and developmental opportunities for the Yendi constituency which will win him the primaries.

“ I have supported farmers, provided water facilities to communities, built schools and the delegates know what Farouk can do for the people of Yendi constituency.”

Baba Osman Daney

When DGN Online visited the Yendi constituency, the second on the ballot paper is Baba Osman Daney was out of town but his campaign team were seen touring various communities to campaign for him.

They indicated that their candidate was a grassroots man and has impacted the lives of the people of Yendi which will earn him to massive victory on June 20.

Abibata Shanni Mahama

The Deputy Masloc CEO, Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, the third on the ballot paper told DGN Online that she was winning the parliamentary primaries one touch due to her credibility.

“ I care so much about my reputation and integrity for that matter I am someone who has no scandals surrounding me.”

According to her, she is the only candidate amongst the other candidates who is credible, committed and transparent for the Yendi constituency.

“I am a development person and for that matter, I created employment opportunities, developmental projects and supported farmers and market women in the constituency and committed to do more which I strongly believe will win me the primaries.”

Hajia Abibata called on delegates to vote wisely for her to bring the needed development to the Yendi constituency.

The NPP Constituency Chairman for Yendi, Alhaji Abubakari Sadiq in an interview told DGN Online that all is set for the primaries in the Yendi constituency come June 20.

He urged the aspirants to a campaign devoid of insults and unprinted words in the last days to ensure that the primaries are peaceful during and after the election.
