Nana Addo stopped short of becoming a militia leader – Sam George

A member of the communication team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he says is the reckless way they have handled their defeat in the just ended General Elections.

President John Dramani Mahama was declared president-elect following the December 7 and 8 polls by the Electoral Commission.

He polled 50.70 per cent of the total valid votes cast against that of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, who garnered 47.74 per cent.

But the NPP led by its flagbearer says the Electoral Commission and the NDC rigged the election to rob them of victory.

Nana Akufo-Addo insists that he won the election and has vowed to go to the Supreme Court to challenge the declaration of the results.

But in an open letter to all Ghanaians, Samuel Nartey George slammed the NPP for pouring insults and invectives on people perceived to be against the cause of the party.

He said: “…the losing New Patriotic Party has reneged on the Patriotism in its name. Its flag bearer has stopped short of becoming a militia leader. A reckless one at that. Urging on his highly misinformed foot soldiers to visit mayhem on media men and innocent Ghanaians.”

Mr George added that: “The educated of his (Nana Addo’s) following have taken to social media and engaged in ethnocentric and tribalistic bigotry.”

He therefore called on all Ghanaians to eschew any violent tendencies and safeguard the peace that the country is currently enjoying.

LETTER TO CITIZENS OF THE REPUBLIC

My fellow country men and women,

My name is Samuel Nartey George. I am a proud citizen of the Republic of Ghana. I have always believed in the future of this great Nation. That she is and would always be the beacon of hope for a despairing continent. That belief remains intact today even in the face of adversity.

Almost five months ago, a man I loved and respected was called home to rest. H. E. John Evans Atta Mills was a man who loved this Nation and God. He dedicated himself to service. In His short time as President, He laid a solid foundation for a better Ghana. After His sad parting, His protégé and a man I have come to admire and respect for his depth, poise and statesmanship, took over the reins of power.

In less than five months, H.E. John Dramani Mahama has helped a grieving Nation heal. He has held us together as an entity. He has won the admiration of many a critic with His easygoing demeanour. He marshalled an efficient campaign machinery in so little a time. 39 days to be precise. He pushed us to our limits and gave us a reason to believe. I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve by His side and I am humbled by the lessons I learnt during this campaign.

He always maintained that God was with us. And I knew that with God in the vessel, I would smile at the storm. God indeed crowned our efforts with victory. H. E. has immediately turned His attention to fulfilling the many aspirations of Ghanaians who voted for His government. The job of advancing the Better Ghana Agenda has begun in earnest.

However, fellow country folk, the losing New Patriotic Party has reneged on the Patriotism in its name. Its flag bearer has stopped short of becoming a militia leader. A reckless one at that. Urging on his highly misinformed foot soldiers to visit mayhem on media men and innocent Ghanaians. The educated of His following have taken to social media and engaged in ethnocentric and tribalistic bigotry. The insults and invectives on people perceived to be non aligned to their cause is most distasteful.

The time has come for all well meaning Ghanaians to take a stance for peace. The peace in our nation is our heritage. We would not mortgage it for individual parochial interests. The time is now to take a stand. We must be non confrontational. We must not resort to violence. We must show that good will ALWAYS triumph over evil. We must denounce the purveyors of anarchy and all who seek to destroy this Nation. The unwarranted attacks on innocent Ghanaians going about their normal business must cease. We must demand of the leaders of this unrest to remember their duty of care to protect the peace and stability of Mother Ghana. Posterity would judge their actions. They can go down in history as statesmen or warlords. The choice is primarily theirs to make.

For me, I take a stance for peace. I take a stance for Institutions working. I take a stance for justice. I take a stance for Ghana. I urge all who have grievances to seek redress through the appropriate State Institutions. It is the least they deserve.

I am too proud a Ghanaian to become a refugee in Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso or Togo. Neither am I ready to become a permanent sailor. I love the Motherland and believe in her promise of a better tomorrow.

Yours in the fight for Patriotism, Samuel Nartey George.
