The Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stressed on the significance of a digital address system in a modern economy.
Dr. Bawumia has championed a robust digital address system for Ghana in the past seven years, but many have attempted to play down its significance and why he has devoted much time to it.
Addressing community stakeholders of the Dome Kwabenya Constituency on Thursday, Dr. Bawumia stressed on the significance of the digital address system and the national identity system, which he said is the catalyst upon which developed countries built their economies, which emerging economies like Ghana cannot avoid.
Dr. Bawumia stated that his commitment to building strong foundations for a modern economy in Ghana stems from a book he wrote 14 years ago, in which he identified the lack of digital systems as the bane of African economies.
"When we came into office Ghana was not having an address system that was working throughout the country. But an address system is one of the most important elements for any economy," Dr.. Bawumia said.
"An address system is so important. Today, if you go to the United States and you collapse their address system; just erase it, if you could, that economy will collapse because you can't function. The businesses cannot function without an address system."
"I wrote this in my book 14 years ago that we need an address system so when we came in and I looked at the street address we were doing, I realised that it would take us such a long time to do it so I said let's have a digital address system and now we have it."
"Ghana is the second country in the whole world to have a national digital address system. It is a very comprehensive system and every property in Ghana, whether in the village or in the city, has a property address system and that is very key."
