Communications Director for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoah has said that only a new voters’ register can ensure Ghana has a credible 2020 elections.
He called on all political parties to support the Electoral Commission (EC) in its bid to compile a new voters’ register for the upcoming general elections.
“I think that we all need to put our efforts together to help the Electoral Commission to think and come out with some measures that will protect our people and will also allow them [EC] to meet their constitutional obligation,” Yaw Buaben Asamoah told Reynolds Agyemang on ‘Pae Mu Ka’ on Accra-based Kingdom FM 107.7
“What has changed this time round? The same people who said the EC is an autonomous body are today accusing the government of controlling the commission is that what they (NDC) did when in government.” He enquired
“Are we thinking of not having election 2020, anybody in the country, knowing the resources that we have, knowing the situation of the registers, will go for a new credible register.’’
He explained that, the NPP is poised for an election and “will not accept any situation that we’ll say that because we didn’t have a new register we couldn’t organise the election on December 7.”
Buaben Asamoah asked why the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is up in arms against the EC because the commission is carrying out its mandate.
