Kumasi, Aug. 13, GNA- Opanin Kwame Afreh, a veteran political activist in Kumasi, on Tuesday urged all true democrats to join forces with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to champion the cause of democracy in the country. He said it was time all democrats and NPP members at the constituency, regional and national levels rallied behind Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the party's flag bearer for Election 2008, to build a stronger nation.
A statement signed by Opanin Afresh said apart from the Convention People's Party (CPP) led by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, it was the NPP that had brought meaningful developments to Ghana. He said the NPP has ensured international acceptance of Ghana, free education, School Feeding Programme, National Health Insurance Scheme, the National Youth Employment Programme among others and urged Ghanaians to retain the party in power,
Opanin Afreh cautioned NPP supporters not to be complacent in the 2008 Election despite the party's success story, instead they should work harder to consolidate its achievements. He cautioned Ghanaians to be wary of the utterances of the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), saying "The threat of imprisonment of NPP appointees by the NDC is not a joke". Opanyi Afreh called on the NPP to work seriously to prevent power from falling into the hands of the NDC. He suggested to all minority parties to consider supporting the NPP in case of a second round voting in December, saying, "after all, in Ghana, only two political traditions, the UP and CPP count". Opanin Afreh has applauded the election of Dr Mathew Nana Poku Prempeh to contest the Manhyia constituency seat on NPP ticket.
