SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT ON DIVISIVE STATEMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFFO ADDO, THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OF THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY.
The Patriotic Youth Front (PYF) has taken a strong exception to comments by Dr Amoako Tuffuor, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, on the Oman FM, an Accra-based radio station, which suggested that the party's presidential candidate for Election 2008 Nana Akufo-Addo held a clandestine meeting with his favourites in the Ashanti Region during a recent visit.
In a press statement released on 1 February 2010 and signed by the communications director of the group Chief Mohammed Obosu, Dr Tuffuor’s had alleged that Nana Addo assembled some constituency chairpersons and executives within the Ashanti Region and held meetings with them for his own parochial interest.
The statement said Dr Tuffuor also alleged that Nana Addo had again entreated the constituency executives to vote against certain individuals certain individuals seeking national and regional office, perceived to be pro-Alan Kyerematen with explanation that he (Nana Addo) could not work with them.
According to the statement, “these have shaken the spines and also caused a stir among some members within the party.
“We want to state unequivocally that, those comments were not only palpable untruth but an indictment on the aptitude of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to unite the rank and file of our great party. Clearly, we debunk those frivolous sentiments, it should not in any way be tolerated or treated with kid gloves both within and outside of the party. It is most unfortunate for any leading member, at a time when members of the National Executive committee are engaged in series of dialogues to forestall tranquillity within certain volatile constituencies in the Ashanti Region, which saw the postponement of the national delegate conference three consecutive times to make such wild utterances. Such comments put a smack on the efforts and hard work of party officials and foot soldiers, which are sacrificing and working tirelessly to return the party to power,†the statement said.
“It is imperative; we set the records straight, and to refrain Dr Amoaku Tuffuor and his cohorts from making further, divisive comments to dent the image of our potential leaders or to disintegrate the party. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo throughout his dealings with party officials, foot soldiers and sympathizers, has always shown and made public, his desire and commitment for party unity. His virtue of been a unifier was evident, when he was able to bring on board all his contenders during the 2007 flagbearership race to be an integral part of the national campaign team in the 2008 presidential elections , just to send a clear signal to all, the need for a more formidable and a united front,†it said.
The press statement also cautioned well-wishers of the New Patriotic Party to move away from the politics of vituperation and vilification of our potential leaders, so as not to give our political opponents arms to use against any of our leader, who will emerge as the flagbearer in the upcoming presidential primaries slated for December this year. Ghanaians, all over, are indeed yearning for the come back of the New Patriotic Party; hence, we must all ponder on things that will bind us together other than divisive tendencies that will put our party in to chaos.
“The exemplary and selfless leadership set by our forebears, the likes of Dr J.B. Danquah, Prof Abrefa Busia, S.B. Dombo and others to pursue the supreme interest of the party and to a large extent Ghana, should be inculcated as a guide by all and sundry within the NPP fraternity for the collective interest of all. Posterity, will never forgive our leaders if they fail to live up to the tenets and foundations on which the party was built. United we must remain, to ensure development in freedom for mother Ghana,†the group said.
Long Live NPP. God Bless Ghana.
