Politician says Nkrumah's image should be projected

Drobo (B/A), Sept. 30, GNA - Mr. Pierre Kwabena Ankomah, who contested the Jaman South constituency seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in Election 2008 and lost, has appealed to the Committee for the Kwame Nkrumah centenary anniversary to highlight the ideals and project the image of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. "It is important to note that the attempt to expunge the achievements and ideals of Dr. Nkrumah from contemporary Ghanaian history between the time of his overthrow in 1966 and 1972 by his foes seems to have succeeded to some extent because majority of Ghanaians aged below 40 only know Dr. Nkrumah as the first President of Ghana but have very little knowledge about what he did for the country and Africa", he told the GNA in an interview.

He expressed regret that most of the books written by and on Nkrumah were not known to the Ghanaian youth and even most Ghanaian university graduates aged above 50 years had not read any of Nkrumah's books or books on him whereas in Cuba and other countries such books were common and read by many people.

He suggested to the Nkrumah Centenary Anniversary Committee to approach to non-governmental organisations, individuals and corporate organisations to assist in getting Dr Nkrumah's books re-published and distributed to regional and school libraries. Mr. Ankomah called on the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and other television stations to show, from time to time, documentary films on Dr Nkrumah on occasions. He commended the GBC and the Information Services Department for their insistence to keep all documentary films in the face of the pressure to get them destroyed and expressed the conviction that such activities would help rekindle the spirit of patriotism, unity and selflessness not only in Ghanaian youth but also in politicians. 30 Sept 09
