Professor Charles Ofusu Marfo, a former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has called on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to engage the media on a national discussion.
This call comes amidst ongoing political discussions about the potential for a presidential debate between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.
Speaking on a panel discussion on Oyerepa TV on July 25, 2024, Professor Marfo emphasized the importance of media engagement for Bawumia.
According to him, despite the challenges posed by the current economic situation under the NPP government.
"Yes, I agree he should engage the media. Media engagement will be very difficult for Bawumia because of the mess we are in now, and when I say this, I don't really blame him.
“So, I am saying that even before he meets the media, he should answer the 170 questions before. You see that will bring some sense of confidence because this debate I don't get it,” he said.
The professor further elaborated that before Vice President Bawumia shifts his attention to debating NDC's flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, he should first address a set of 170 questions he previously posed to the late Vice President Dr. Kwesi Amissah-Arthur during the NDC administration.
"To tell Ghanaians that he [Bawumia] is very serious, he should solve the 170 questions he set for Mahama first. He should have a TV show and answer those questions. Because you exhibit seriousness thereby pursuing certain causes," Marfo asserted.
Professor Marfo's comments come at a time when Bawumia is advocating for a presidential debate with Mahama.
He suggested that Bawumia could either engage in a media session, akin to a recent one held by Mahama or address the 170 questions publicly on television.
“He should sit on TV and solve the 170 questions," Marfo added.
