Richard Ahiagbah questions NDC's stance on debt negotiations

Richard Ahiagbah Richard Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah, the National Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has questioned the opposition's reaction to the government's external debt negotiations.

In a social media post, he expressed bewilderment at the assertion by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the negotiation's success should not be celebrated.

The NDC's stance comes in the wake of the government's announcement that it had negotiated a significant reduction of US$4.7 billion in Ghana's external debt.

Ahiagbah contrasted this achievement with the NDC's previous borrowing of $918 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2015, intended to stabilize the economy, noting that the savings are fivefold greater than the borrowed amount.

He criticized the NDC for not acknowledging the debt reduction, which includes loans taken during their tenure, as a victory for the nation.

He argued that the substantial financial relief resulting from the negotiations warrants national celebration and recognition.

“The NDC has stated that we should not celebrate the successful external debt negotiations.

“However, we must ask the NDC what they would have done if they were the ones who negotiated to save Ghana $4.7 billion off our debt, which is five times more than the $918 million they borrowed in 2015 from the IMF to stabilize the economy.

“Ghana has saved $4.7 billion of debt, part of which the NDC has borrowed, and they say we should not celebrate it. This is quite perplexing. Commendations to H.E Akufo-Addo for the leadership, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for bringing it home, and Ken Ofori Atta for laying the foundation for this outcome,” he said.

In his social media post, he also lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his leadership throughout the negotiation process. He commended Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for successfully concluding the negotiations and acknowledged Ken Ofori-Atta for laying the groundwork for this favorable outcome.
