Asaki Samson Awingobit has filed his nomination to contest for the position of national chairman of the People's National Convention (PNC).

His bid is accompanied by a message of unity, as he aims to rally the party to challenge the dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the PNC headquarters on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, after submitting his nomination forms, Awingobit expressed his determination to strengthen the PNC through regional tours aimed at rebranding the party and reigniting its grassroots support.

He emphasized the need for vibrant leadership, criticizing the current administration for its shortcomings.

"I know the election I have already won; I am just waiting for them to vote for me to confirm it," Awingobit confidently stated.

He further criticized the leadership elected in 2020, noting that the party has faced numerous challenges since the last election.

“I strongly believe that the current leadership of our party did not manage the party very well. After the 2020 elections, there have been numerous issues. What I have realized is that the chairperson we elected in 2020 could not help the party. For any party to be vibrant and strong, a lot depends on the national chairman. I saw that there have been many issues, but our national chairman was no longer visible. So, I think our party needs a new leader to connect with the grassroots,” he said.

According to him, the national chairman's role is crucial in driving the party forward, and he believes that the current leadership has failed in this regard.

Awingobit’s nomination was received by the PNC's national executives, led by National Youth Organizer Mark Ewusi, who extended their best wishes for his campaign.

The PNC's national election is scheduled for August 31, 2024, when delegates from all sixteen regions will convene to select their presidential candidate and other party officials for the 2024 general election.
