Sekou’s absence in CPP is no problem - Samia

The Leader and Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party, CPP, Samia Nkrumah has said the survival of the party his Father founded, is not contingent upon his brother, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah’s membership.

The former Jomoro Member of Parliament said in an interview with XYZ News that: “We don’t just need our biological brothers to join us, we need all Ghanaians to believe in us”.

“He is a free person. It is legitimate. This is a multiparty democracy and people are free to join whichever party they want to”, she added.

She, however, pointed out that: “I have made a choice to revive Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s vision through the political vehicle he founded, and we are happy to do so and we are ready and prepared. We want to serve our people, and we want to serve them with honesty and sincerity and we have a lot to offer”.

Her comments come in the backdrop of Dr. Sekou Nkrumah’s announcement of his intention to, for the umpteenth time, switch political support from one party to another.

The last son of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a member of the CPP but resigned to join the governing NDC in 2007 when the Party was then in opposition.

He later served as Coordinator of the National Youth Authority in the Mills-Mahama administration following the NDC’s victory in the 2008 elections.

Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, however, remained a harsh critic of the late President John Mills’ style of running the country which cost him his job.

He nonetheless remained an NDC member but promised never to campaign for then President John Mills, or vote for him in the 2012 elections.

Dr. Nkrumah later pledged support for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, the Presidential candidate of the main opposition NPP and announced his resignation from the NDC.

He told XYZ News on Friday April 5, 2013, that: “I will not be too comfortable with working inside the NPP because of the difference of ideology”.

He said he was considering re-joining the NDC.
