Volta NDC to replace executives who quit

Ho, Feb 23, GNA-The Volta Regional Secretariat of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is to organize a special regional conference to replace five regional executives who resigned from the party in January this year.

Mr Modestus Ahiable, Volta Regional Chairman of the NDC who gave the hint during a chat with journalists in Ho on Thursday said there were already several letters of intent from members of the party to occupy the vacant positions.

He said naturally any political party would be concerned about people living its fold.

Mr Ahiable however, derided the notion that the resignations were en-masse and widespread, saying the Regional Secretariat was not aware of many other notices of resignations posted in the media. He said in some cases, "individuals who had left the NDC long ago and were known to be playing important roles for some other parties were mentioned to have now resigned from our Party'. Mr Ahiable lashed at the Police for brutalizing people demonstrating against the promulgation of the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill (ROPAB) last Tuesday. He alleged that the Police planted people among the demonstrators to carry out acts of lawlessness to give them the pretext to charge on the organizers.

The regional chairman wondered why about 1,000 police personnel moving alongside the demonstrators could not pick up the handful of people said to have torched tyres.

Mr Ahiable said it was not logical for a country, which lacked the resources and the technical expertise to organize elections at home to rope in its citizens in other countries.

He conceded that the NDC government had considered the Bill, just as other policies such as the health insurance scheme while in power, but said it thought much more thorough consultations and planning needed to be carried out before its introduction.

Mr Ahiable said in the circumstances of the President vowing to have the ROPAB passed, one could only "smell rat," suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government only wanted to ride on the backs of ROBAP for another underserved victory in elections. 23 Feb 06
