Vote out heartless politicians - Group

Electorates wait for their turn to vote at a polling station. Electorates wait for their turn to vote at a polling station.

National Youth for Peace (NYFP) has called on the Ghanaian electorate to vote against politicians who will go to a polling station to cast their votes without their families.

“NYFP is reliably informed that few days to the election period, some presidential and parliamentary candidates allegedly send their wives and children abroad with the aim of keeping them safe in case there is any turmoil during the election,” noted NYFP.

In a statement signed and issued by Executive Director of NYEP, Eric Baffoe Nyarko, the group said it has over the years advocated for peace which many people have grown to embrace.

The statement however, regretted that upon all the progress NYFP chalked, the National Peace Council, religious groups, the media, traditional leaders, and the National Commission on Civic Education have decided to do whatever they want by disrupting the peace that the country has been enjoying since independence.

He appealed to the security agencies to deal ruthlessly with anyone who will attempt to take away a ballot box from a polling station or collation centre by “shooting the person’s legs.”

This action, NYEP further stressed, will restore the peace that “we are enjoying now.”

In this regard, the statement called on macho men who usually allow themselves to be used by politicians to be vigilant on election day and abstain from violent activities.

“We urge the chiefs, the clergy, office of National Chief Imam, and all who have major roles to play in our peace process not to relent in their efforts to improve on it. Political shows hosted on various radio and TV stations must screen the utterances of their panellists when they are on radio and television.”

We are once again calling on the Electrical Commission (EC) to stand firm in conducting peaceful free, fair and transparent election since the future of this country depends on the outcome of this great election.
