WILDAF demands 'competent' woman as Veep

Women in Law and Development in Africa, (WILDAF) says its proposal for a woman Vice president is for the country is to demonstrate to the international community the country’s utmost commitment to gender equality.

According to the group, the late President John Mills was committed to promoting women to occupying high public and political offices and believes President Mahama will consider a woman for the vacant vice president position.

The National Programme Co-ordinator of WILDAF, Bernice Sam has however dismissed criticisms that choosing a woman Vice President will be mere tokenism.

“The important thing about nominating a female Vice President is to show the international world that Women matter in Ghana’s politics but we have not demonstrated this adequately because of the low number of women we have.

“I do not believe it will be tokenism in nominating to nominate a competent woman who can run the affairs of the country".**
