The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has assured the newly-appointed Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, of his support and collaboration to advance the course of democracy in the country.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after Ayariga was officially appointed, Afenyo-Markin assured the new leaders in Parliament of his continued support.
"I want to congratulate the new team one more time and assure them that our side will treat them with respect. We will work together, beautify democracy, and assure the nation that although it is NDC and NPP, it is about systems and structures," he stated.
To the incoming team led by Mahama Ayariga, Afenyo-Markin said, "We served together in the ECOWAS Parliament, and you were very supportive. You earned respect in the sub-region. In fact, Hon Ayariga, there is something I learnt from you, and I want to share, 'You don't mind how long it takes to negotiate to bring peace,' and that has earned you a great deal of respect.
"I believe that even as Majority Leader, you will not assume you have the numbers; you will continue with that skill. As a government leader, if you try to introduce more debates, government business will suffer."
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has announced a major reshuffle in its leadership, following Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s recent elevation as the Minister of Finance.
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament of Bawku Central, has stepped into the role of Majority Leader, taking over from Dr. Forson.
Assisting him will be Kweku George Ricketts-Hagan, the Member of Parliament of Cape Coast South, who has been appointed as the Deputy Majority Leader.
The position of Majority Chief Whip has been filled by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament of South Dayi, who replaces Kwame Governs Agbodza, Member of Parliament of Adaklu, in this critical role.
Additionally, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, representing the Ada Constituency, has been named the First Deputy Whip. Richard Acheampong, Member of Parliament of Bia East, rounds up the new leadership team as the Second Deputy Majority Whip.
