The election of John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has been met with anger and disappointment by a section of the general public.

Despite the widespread celebrations that erupted in many parts of the country following Mahama's decisive victory, some Ghanaians have voiced their disappointment and dissatisfaction with his election and the subsequent defeat of the New Patriotic Party.

Speaking with GhanaWeb a day after the EC's official declaration, some individuals emotionally expressed their disapproval of Mahama's re-election, raising concerns that he might cancel the Free SHS program and further damage the economy with only four years left for him as president.

One person stated that the news of Mahama's return does not indicate or inspire any positive change, raising concerns about the potential cancellation of the Free SHS policy.

According to her, she was expecting a Dr. Bawumia presidency to continue the work of the NPP government, however, things took a different turn, resulting in Mahama's victory.

“I will just accept it because no matter what, he has won. He says he wants to continue so he should continue let's see. We want peace and calm and if he can continue the works of President Nana Akufo-Addo, then he can go ahead. I was looking forward to Bawumia winning because of the Free SHS. I have kids and all that I hope is for him not to cancel the Free SHS,” she said.

Another individual expressed disappointment over the election results.

She stated that Mahama’s return is a misguided decision that could harm the country, pointing out how Akufo-Addo actually advanced the nation despite claims of hardships.

“I am saddened because Nana Akufo-Addo and his government progressed the country and made it prosperous. There is no truth to the claims by some Ghanaians that there is hardship in the country. What did Mahama do when he was the former president? I strongly know that next four years ‘it will be possible’ and we will stage a strong comeback,” she told GhanaWeb.

Meanwhile, other Ghanaians have expressed their satisfaction and happiness with Mahama's return to the presidency.

A supporter of Mahama stated that she felt fulfilled, knowing that the country has been saved from the ruins of the current government.

“I am overwhelmed with excitement and my heart is at peace knowing that we have rescued the country. The country belongs to the NDC and Ghana which we have rescued. We will turn the country back to its glory days .”

Another ecstatic supporter of Mahama said, "I am happy he has won because I supported him. What I don't like is that he will only rule for four years, but now that he has won, he should make sure the prices of goods are significantly reduced, the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate improves, and that he fulfills his promises."

President-Elect John Dramani Mahama was declared winner of the 2024 general elections after securing 6,328,397 votes, which accounts for 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his closest opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in a race that featured 12 presidential candidates.
