You're gaining notoriety for comments that seek to create mayhem - Nana B tells Mahama

National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Henry Nana Boakye, aka Nana B, has slammed Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama for calling on his party's supporters to embark on a protest at all district offices of the Electoral Commission across the country on September 17, 2024.

The NDC has set Tuesday for the protest in response to alleged discrepancies in the voter register, which the NDC argues could undermine the credibility of the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The announcement came during a press briefing following the filing of Mr. Mahama's nomination for the presidential race.

Addressing supporters in Sampa, Jaman North District of the Bono Region, Mr. Mahama stressed the need for accountability and transparency from the EC.

“If we desire free, fair, and peaceful elections, then the EC must up their game and do things right. So on the 17th of this month [September], NDC is going to demonstrate in every town that has an EC office. Our chairman [Johnson Asiedu Nketiah] has announced it,” Mr. Mahama declared.

But responding to Mr. Mahama's comment in an interview with Joy FM monitored by GhanaWeb, Nana B condemned the former President, saying his call is reckless and unnecessary.

"The former president, frankly speaking, is gaining some unwholesome notoriety for always unleashing comments that seek to create mayhem. For me, this is a needless call. Why do I say so? I say so because that is the essence of the exhibition of voter register. What is important is that you will go through it, and if you are able to ascertain any irregularities, what you do is forward it to the Electoral Commission and the Commission is bound by law to make sure everything is corrected.

"So for me, this call is needless, and we have gone through this process several times; that is the essence of exhibition. You have to refer the issues to the EC for some solution to be proffered. But for you to say that you are going to demonstrate at all of the EC's district offices, saying the EC is planning to rig the election for the NPP,... I think this is very unfortunate and reckless. I think that this should not be coming from a former president. The EC is constitutionally mandated to deal with such issues," Nana B stated.
