Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reiterated that persons who have threatened not to hand over power after the December elections will have no choice but to do so.

Alban Bagbin noted that the constitution clearly outlines who wields power; hence, the people’s choice at the polls must be respected.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made these remarks during a media engagement in Tamale on Friday, August 31, 2024.

The Speaker told journalists in Tamale on Friday that “Those who make utterances that they won’t hand over power will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people," he noted.

He further reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

The Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, lauded  Speaker Bagbin for his commitment to press freedom and support for journalists in the country.

The Speaker's comments follow concerns raised by some groups and individuals that the ruling New Patriotic Party, (NPP) may not hand over power after the 2024 presidential elections.
