Your call for debate is very 'needless' - Atik Mohammed to Bawumia

Atik Mohammed Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed has rubbished the presidential debate call by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to former President John Dramani Mahama.

The Vice President and presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has thrown the gauntlet to the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Mr. Mahama, to present himself for a debate aimed at informing Ghanaians about their policies and track records.

However, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress has turned down the request.

Despite this, the New Patriotic Party insists the two leaders must come to the debate table.

Discussing the matter during Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, Atik Mohammed described this call as "needless," stating the approach is an elite practice which has little to no effect on the average Ghanaian.

"If you ask me, it's unnecessary," he told host Nana Yaw Kesseh, arguing, "for me, the practice of having debates has limited utility if you ask me to the formation of opinions on candidates...This clamor for debate, I really want to find out what really is the motivation. I keep saying this and I will repeat it again, sometimes, in these things you need to be careful what you wish for."

He charged Dr. Bawumia and Mahama to focus on orienting Ghanaians with their policies.

"Let's keep focusing on the policies that you feel your candidate is going to present to better the lot of the Ghanaian people. This is what, for me, is important but to keep insisting there has to be a debate...this ding-dong is needless. Present your policies; let's juxtapose policy by policy."
