Ghana Media & Democracy Journalists Forum To Organise Media Workshop

The Ghana Media & Democracy Forum in association with the Africa Media &
Democracy Institute, is organizing a two-day (2) media workshop for
broadcast Journalists and other media practitioners covering the
forthcoming 2012 General elections. The two-day (2) event will take place
at the Accra International Press Center, theme; THE ROLE OF BROADCAST
JOURNLISTS IN CONDUCTING PEACFUL ELECTIONS. The objectives of Forum are;
A. To serve as a platform for Journalists in media, engaging the society
on issues of democracy, media and development.
B. To build a platform for continuous dialogue and discussion on how to
ensure media pluralism, freedom of expression and access to information
among practicing Journalists/ members.
C. To serves as a peer-review platform for members and a focal point for
the critique of the role of the media as it interfaces democracy and to
build members' capacity on democracy and media issues.
D. To organise workshops and training and set high standard of
journalistic practices among members for development and poverty
reduction.
E. To build and maintain an interactive dialogue with local, national and
international organizations that have similar objectives.

Membership of the Forum is voluntary and include journalists, from print,
TV/radio/internet, media researchers, as well as organizational membership
such as national media commissions, community radio stations, cross-media
and web-based projects, NGOs promoting the cause of democracy, media
research, and community media lobbying groups. The Ag. Secretary-General
of Forum Daniel Abugah intimated that Critical to peaceful elections in a
democracy is also balance and fair reportage by broadcast journalists and
particularly Radio broadcasting. The patronage of radio broadcast is well
patronized in Ghana and generally in Africa and as such particular
emphasis must be made to address the challenges and opportunities that the
medium can provide for peaceful elections. The two-day (2) workshop will
address operational challenges in election reportage particularly by
broadcast journalists such as the FM radio stations in context of national
cohesion and peace and stability.
