? At its Annual Easter Soup Kitchen
(Kokomlemle- Accra) Accra-based radio station Joy 99.7FM will bring hope to some 6,000 street children at its Annual Easter Soup Kitchen on Holy Saturday April 10. The event, which is primarily a social party for street children, takes place at the Holy Gardens near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle every year during Easter.
With support from various donors, sponsoring organisations and medical institutions, JoyFM will provide hot cooked food and drinks to the thousands of displaced children and other street people. They will also benefit from free medical services, including screening for various ailments and medication.
The radio station?s staff will be assisted by their volunteers from the Volta Hall of the University of Ghana and many other public-spirited individuals and organisation to cater for the over 6,000 persons expected at the event.
Planning Committee Chairman, Klaus VonBackustein said in a statement that JoyFM remains committed to the development and support for street persons, adding that the nation?s favourite radio station will in the next year begin the adoption and support of selected street children.
Explaining further, VonBackustein said ?we have been doing this for the last eight (8) years and we believe that it is time, together with our patrons and supporters to begin to take some of these children off the street.?
JoyFM, Ghana?s first registered private radio station has and continues to lead the pack in its support for the needy and vulnerable in society. The Easter Soup Kitchen has been running since 1997, in addition to thrice yearly blood donation exercises, the Joy Needy Child Project and the station?s support for needy but brilliant university students.
Meanwhile, rehabilitation of the Children?s Emergency Ward at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has begun under a JoyFM initiated campaign. Operations Manager Komla Dumor said, ?the campaign dubbed Joy To The Kids and launched late last year is aimed at renovating and expanding the ward to bring joy to the face of the sick children.
JoyFM, Ghana?s leading radio station begun transmission in 1995 and has since set the pace in professional broadcasting, event management and social programs.
