PRESS RELEASE
September 10, 2007
It began in a very inconsequential manner but the rain waters up North are now wrecking more havoc than expected and it cannot be taken lightly any longer after, the loss of human life, the destruction of more than 4000 homes, as well as thousands of Ghanaians who have become internally displaced persons.
Farms and farmlands have also been taken over by the floods and it is very obvious that the destruction of sections of the country’s food basket would have far reaching adverse effects nationwide.
I am therefore appealing to all Ghanaians to on this matter, lay aside partisan interests and considerations and contribute in ways within our means to help our brethren manage the unfortunate situation they are saddled with.
It is very disheartening, reports emanating from the North as to how partisan considerations are going into the provision of relief items to our suffering brethren. No political party has the right to warm its hands on the political misfortune of any section of Ghanaians. Our help in such times must be all embracing.
It is quite obvious that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) on its own is unable to contain the current situation and I am calling on President Kufuor to please get the 48 Engineer Regiment, which has been very effective in times past as regards disaster management, to place its expertise at the disposal of the disaster victims.
What is happening up north is nothing to be toyed with and I hope that all those who have the wherewithal, would do all we can to help alleviate the suffering of the people and also help manage the situation in the best possible way.
I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and for those who have been internally displaced, I wish that what myself and other Ghanaians would be able to contribute would help them weather the storm.
