14 killed at Kumasi, Beposo

Fourteen people have lost their lives in two different accidents in Takoradi and Kumasi.

Eleven persons died on the spot, and six others suffered life-threatening injuries yesterday morning following a gory vehicular accident that occurred on the main Kumasi-Accra highway, while three people died at Beposo on Sunday.

A Mercedes Benz truck loaded with plantain was heading in the Accra direction when it collided head-on with an advancing Ssangyong mini bus, driving at top speed from the opposite direction on the Kumasi-Accra highway.

After the strong impact, both vehicles fell on their sides and blocked the road in the process. Minutes later, the driver of a speeding Hyundai Grace bus, from the Accra end, rammed his bus into the truck.

The accident involving three vehicles occurred around 4:30am at a spot between Juaso and Atwedie, and its effect was so devastating that onlookers even found it difficult to get closer to the scene, initially.

The accident spot, eyewitnesses told the paper, was covered with human blood and body parts, scattered all over the busy road in the early morning.

The six people who sustained severe injuries were rushed to the hospital by some courageous eyewitnesses for medical attention. The dead persons were also taken to the morgue for autopsy.

DSP Augustine Mensah, the Konongo Divisional MTTU Commander, told DAILY GUIDE that when he and his men arrived at the accident scene, the entire place was covered with blood.

He said around 4:30am on Monday, the Mercedes Benz truck, registered GR 9836 D, and fully loaded with plantain, was from the Kumasi area heading towards the Accra direction.

DSP Mensah noted that initial reports the police was privy to, indicated that a Ssangyong mini bus with registration number AW 6624-13, from the Accra area, veered into the lane of the truck at top speed.

He said the driver of the truck saw the Ssangyong bus driving towards his car, so he moved aside to avert a head-on collision but it was too late as the truck grazed the side of the Ssangyong mini bus.

The police capo said the impact of the crash resulted in the driver of the Ssangyong mini bus losing one of his hands, adding that most of the passengers that were seated behind the bus driver died with others sustaining injuries.

DSP Mensah said the two cars, after the crash, blocked the road, and minutes later, a speeding Hyundai Grace bus, registered GC 1628-11, rammed into the truck from the Accra direction.

He said when the police team reached the scene, the dead and the injured had been rushed to the Juaso Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

DSP Mensah confirmed that eight people, including three females, lost their lives in the gory accident, adding that six people who also suffered severe injuries were receiving medical attention.

Three people died on the spot and eight others sustained various degrees of injury when the Toyota Hiace bus in which they were travelling was rammed into by a Benz cargo truck near the Beposo Bridge on the Takoradi-Cape Coast highway last Sunday.

The Toyota bus, with registration number GM 4117-13, was moving from Cape-Coast to Takoradi while the cargo truck, with the number AS 7609 D, was also moving in the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

The deceased were identified as Kosam Kyei Amoako, 59, Philip Morgan, 45, and Simon Nanohwoidi Quarshie, 58, driver of the cargo truck.

Lawrence Acquah, 37 and the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus, together with eight other passengers who sustained injuries were on admission at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi.

ASP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku who confirmed the story in an interview with DAILY GUIDE, mentioned that the Benz cargo truck was from Takoradi heading towards Cape-Coast.

She indicated that on reaching a curve near the Beposo Bridge the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered off its lane.

The Cargo truck driver then ran into the Toyota Hiace bus which was also moving from Cape-Coast to Takoradi, killing himself and two passengers onboard the bus, on the spot.

The Police PRO indicated that the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital morgue.
