AMA Revenue Collector grabbed

Accra, June 8, GNA - Patrick Allotey Doe, a Revenue Collector with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, (AMA) is in the grips of the law for issuing fake receipts to unsuspecting ratepayers.

Mr Allotey Doe, who was arrested on Saturday, February 7, 2004, was on Tuesday put before an Accra Circuit Court after investigations by the Assembly.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted a five million cedis bail with one surety to reappear on June 18.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) E. Y. Frimpong told the Court that the AMA Officials and the Security Agents had a tip off that Mr Allotey Doe was issuing fake AMA tickets to ratepayers and accosted him.

He said an amount of 977,950 cedis was retrieved from the accused when he was searched.

ASP Frimpong said Allotey Doe told those who arrested him, that only 300,000 cedis formed part of the proceeds from the issue of fake tickets and insisted that the rest was his.

The Prosecutor said that investigations established that the accused used genuine but exhausted booklet with cover number 0883601-0883700 issued by AMA.

ASP Frimpong said the accused had sold 70 of the fake tickets to unsuspected ratepayers at his duty post at the Cocoa Marketing Board Gate One.
