The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has elected Mr Thomas Ashong, Darkuma North Assemblyman as Presiding Member for a four-year term.
Two other contestants, Mr Alfred Adjei and Mr Musah Ziad, assembly members stepped down for Mr Ashong to get the nod.
Mr Ashong would be sworn in at the next sitting of the Assembly.
In a speech he said there is the need to maintain the non-partisan idea of the District Assembly concept.
He gave the assurance that he would mobilise the assembly members for accelerated development of Accra as expected by the people.
Mr Ashong said he would ensure that all and sundry forge ahead in unity to move Accra towards achieving its development goals.
“I am confident that after this election all assemblymen and women have joined hands in unity to advance the principles and ideas of the AMA,” he said.
Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Metropolitan Chief Executive commended the assembly members for their sense of maturity and urged them to support the elected Presiding Member to enable him works towards the development of Accra.
In the election, Mr Ashong polled 86 ‘Yes’ votes as against 18 ‘No’ votes with two spoiled ballot papers out of 106 votes cast.
Mr Joseph Addo Boateng, the Acting Director of the Electoral Commission supervised the election.
