Abutia-Kpolukope primary school wins tree-planting competition

Abutia-Kpolukope (V/R), July 30, GNA - Mr Georg (Ed. Correct) Zubler, the Swiss Ambassador, has expressed the need for the Ghana Education Service (GES), to inculcate tree planting into schools' curricula to enable pupils to appreciate the essence of trees.

Mr Zubler made the call at Abutia- Kpolukope in the Ho Municipality, when he presented three million cedis and a certificate to the Local Authority Primary School for placing first in the national tree-planting competition organised by the GES in collaboration with the Swiss Embassy.

He said if pupils were encouraged to plant trees and develop a sense of ownership for them they would acquire a sense of responsibility for the holistic development of society.

Mr Zubler said pupils must be told that Ghana had lost 80 percent of its forests since independence (1957) and faces a bleak future in timber production.

Mr Mawutor Goh, the Municipal Chief Executive, appealed to the school to be a crusader for tree planting in the municipality.
