Address the issue of content development, stakeholders told

Professor Nii Quaynor, a computer scientist, has called on stakeholders to address the issue of content and application development, since it could contribute to national development.

He said there was the need to invest more in the infrastructure development of the internet connectivity to boost the telecoms sector.

Prof Quaynor made the call during a social gathering session organized by the internet society in Accra on Wednesday.

He said the country’s internet penetration, which falls below African’s average for some time now, had not recovered since but expressed the hope that with the necessary infrastructure mechanisms put in place, the sector has a bright future.

He said his return to Ghana was on a United Nations Development Programme’s Project to help develop the Information Technology infrastructure for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation oil exploitation activities.

He said the first Ghanaian website was developed in 1996 by a team led by Mr. William Tevie, who is currently the Director General of the National Information Technology Agency with the name www.ghana.com.

He said the only international gateway in Ghana was the voice gateway of Ghana Telecom at Kuntanse near Nsawam in the Eastern region of Ghana.

Mr. Tevie commended Prof Nii Quaynor and his team of experts for their immense contribution to the growth of network systems in country and introduction of Internet to Ghana and West Africa.**
